Sustainability

Our concrete commitment to a sustainable future

Our survival

Our survival depends on the health of the planet, and our current course of action is no longer sustainable. Just consider that 8 million tons of plastic enter the oceans every year, and at this rate, by 2050 the amount of plastic in the oceans will exceed that of fish.

The enormous amount of non-renewable energy we use is accelerating climate change, and limiting global temperature rise to less than 1.5°C will require truly major economic and social changes.

Another key issue is deforestation: by 2030, only 10% of the world's rainforests could remain, and at this rate they could disappear entirely within 300 years. All of this is the result of uncontrolled development through industrialization, urbanization, and the exploitation of natural resources. Our actions today will not only impact the health of the planet, but inevitably also the people and communities we live in and interact with.

At our current growth rate, by 2050 we will need the equivalent of 2.3 Earths to sustain ourselves.

Doing nothing is no longer an option then.

Sustainability is the key word, a word that indicates the condition of satisfying current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to satisfy their own.

Circular economy

Sustainability arises from a new awareness, which involves the use of an increasingly circular economy, capable of self-sustaining.

We promote sustainable products and services, which can be part of the solution to global sustainability. We take social and environmental value creation seriously, rather than ignoring risks and opportunities by focusing on short-term profits. We encourage customers and suppliers to follow the same virtuous path.

Companies can have a positive impact by supporting a low-carbon, circular economy and fostering a diverse and inclusive culture, upholding human rights, and offering economic and educational opportunities. They can strengthen their sustainable procurement efforts by incorporating sustainability practices into their daily operations, such as carbon reduction programs.

From this perspective, the range of HP products (see HP Amplify Impact program) is designed and built with these issues in mind and helps accompany companies on this virtuous, albeit complex, path.

The UN Agenda 2030

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is an action plan for people, the planet, and prosperity, signed on September 25, 2015, by 193 United Nations countries, including Italy, with the aim of defining a commitment to ensuring a better present and future for our planet and the people who inhabit it. The global agenda defines 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030, divided into 169 targets, which represent a compass to place Italy and the world on a sustainable path.

The process of changing the development model is monitored through the Goals, Targets, and over 240 indicators: with respect to these parameters, each country is periodically evaluated at the UN and by national and international public opinion.

For the first time, a clear assessment is made of the unsustainability of the current development model, not only environmental, but also economic and social, thus definitively overcoming the idea that sustainability is solely an environmental issue and affirming an integrated vision of the various dimensions of development.

The Sustainable Development Goals are all interconnected.

Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education (Goal 4) also means offering equal opportunities to women and men (Goal 5); to ensure health and well-being (Goal 3), we need to live on a healthy planet (Goals 6, 13, 14 and 15); decent work for all (Goal 8) requires eliminating inequalities (Goal 10). For this reason, the 2030 Agenda poses a complex challenge, since the three dimensions of development (economic, environmental and social) are closely interrelated and each Goal cannot be considered independently but must be pursued on the basis of a systemic approach that takes into account their mutual interrelationships and does not have negative repercussions on other spheres of development.

Only the integrated growth of all three components will allow the achievement of sustainable development.

We are all part of the change for a better tomorrow, we are all responsible for it. And it is our actions that will influence the future of our children and future generations. Healthy lifestyles and individual actions make the difference.
